The resume is traditionally a tool that is utilized to get the attention of employers and present yourself as the perfect applicant. It details your work experience, listing previous jobs with company names, locations, job titles, dates of employment, and key responsibilities and achievements. Your education background is included, with institutions attended, degrees earned, and graduation dates, along with any relevant coursework or honors. And there may be a list of hard and soft skills pertinent to the job you are applying for.
So why do we need the resume at all? What we really need to know is the skills people have — at what level, and their relevant experience using those skills. That is what tells you whether someone can actually do the work, and it is the one thing a list of titles, dates, and self-described achievements can’t reliably show. Skills-based hiring answers the question the resume only dances around. After 542 years, it may finally be time to let the resume go.
